Art Exhibition – Peter Stiles

⭐ ‘Rock Music’ by Peter Stiles ⭐ 4th May – 23rd May ⭐ The Willoughby Gallery ⭐

I’m looking for the kind of breadth in a picture that engages the imagination, floods the painting with space and allows us to breathe more freely.

Since leaving the Slade Peter Stiles has worked in North Devon. In the last couple of years, group and solo shows include BEEP (biennial exhibition of painting) at the Elysium, Swansea, A Generous Space at Huddersfield Art Gallery, Wells Contemporary at the Cathedral, Changing Atmospheres at Hestercombe and Cathedral at StudioKIND.

He is currently running the gallery at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington.

In his paintings Peter relates, in extraordinary poetic detail, the landscape and events of his own world. There is something in the intimacy of this telling that, paradoxically, lifts it out of the particular. It speaks vividly to us and to our own experience: Dr Paul Harper

His painting is of a high standard, bright and clear. He is a serious gifted artist and one of the few special students I taught during the twenty five years I was a lecturer at the Slade: Jeffery Camp RA

What strikes one immediately about the paintings is that they are beautifully composed. He achieves a kind of asymmetrical balance, a ‘unity in variety’ as it was once called.
